Researching the Now and Then
West of England Authors Cathie Hartigan and Elizabeth Ducie set their fiction both in the present and the past. In her debut novel, Secret of the Song, Amazon best-seller Cathie writes about modern-day Exeter and renaissance Italy.
In her prize-winning debut novel, Gorgito’s Ice Rink, Elizabeth travels to Russia, both in Stalin’s time and in the post-Soviet era. At Dartington’s new fringe festival, the two local authors discussed the very different types of research required for writing about the present and the past.
A lively Q&A session followed their talk during which it was discovered that both Elizabeth and Cathie had felt the first spark of an idea for their novels at Dartington. Clearly, it is a very inspiring place!
